Former ADC Saklain to Face Compulsory Retirement Over 'Relationship' with Pori Moni

The Ministry of Home Affairs has initially decided to forcefully retire former Additional Deputy Commissioner of DMP Golam Saklain Shithil over an alleged "extramarital relationship" with actress Pori Moni. On June 13, the ministry sent a letter to the Bangladesh Public Service Commission, seeking its opinion on the decision and informing it of the allegations. According to the letter, a police investigation revealed that Saklain, who is married, had an extramarital affair with Pori Moni.

When contacted by The Daily Star for comment, Saklain stated he would speak later and then hung up. The home ministry's letter cited a forensic analysis of Pori Moni's mobile phone, which found exchanged messages between her and Saklain on Facebook Messenger from July 29, 2021, to August 3, 2021, under the names Samsunnahar Smriti (Pori Moni) and Golam Saklain Shithil.

Investigators also discovered WhatsApp conversations between them from July 11, 2021, to August 4, 2021, indicating a romantic relationship rather than a professional one. CCTV footage analysis showed Pori Moni's visits to the Madhumati Police Officers Quarters in Rajarbagh.

The letter also confirmed that Pori Moni spent time at Saklain's government residence in the absence of his wife. A departmental case was filed against Saklain in August 2021, and despite being given a chance to explain, his response was deemed unsatisfactory.

Following reports of unprofessional conduct with Pori Moni while overseeing a case she filed in June, Saklain was transferred from the detective branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police to the public order management division in 2021, and an investigation committee was formed.

On June 9, 2021, Pori Moni filed a case against businessman Nasir Uddin Mahmud, accusing him of rape and attempted murder at the Dhaka Boat Club with Savar Police Station. Saklain supervised the investigation.

On July 18, 2021, Nasir filed a counter-case against Pori Moni, accusing her of attempted murder, assault, vandalism, and intimidation. On August 4, 2021, the Rapid Action Battalion raided Pori Moni's Banani residence, leading to her arrest for possession of foreign liquor.

Pori Moni was remanded for questioning over seven days in three phases and released on bail on September 1, 27 days after her arrest.
